Define the current boat before planning the change.

Existing drawings may be incomplete, out of date, or inconsistent with the boat. Start by establishing the affected configuration. Then trace the proposed change through structure, access, equipment interfaces, installation, commissioning, and as-built records.

Existing condition and change scope

Record the existing condition at the accuracy the change requires.

Scan data can improve the geometry, but it does not replace records, inspection, or physical verification. The baseline should cover only the area and level of accuracy needed for the installation, fit, or reverse-engineering task.

As-is configuration

Collect the available drawings, equipment data, maintenance records, photographs, and prior change information. Inspect the affected area, capture the geometry that controls the work, and mark missing or conflicting information before defining the change.

Scan data and reverse engineering

Before capture, define the area, datum, required accuracy, exclusions, who controls the data, where it may be used, and the dimensions that must be checked physically. Use point cloud or surface data only after its coverage, registration, and accuracy are understood. Derive only the geometry and drawings needed for fit, routing, alignment, replacement, or repeatability.

  • Equipment rooms, decks, machinery spaces, and installation envelopes
  • Missing or obsolete parts and mounting geometry
  • Replacement interfaces and as-built updates

Change impact

Compare the current and proposed configurations. Identify changes to foundations, attachments, access, and service clearances. Then trace the effects on electrical load, controls, cooling, fuel, exhaust, communications, operator use, installation sequence, and testing.

Structural and material changes

Define the function, geometry, interfaces, materials, and attachments for supplier-built aluminum or composite parts. Record corrosion controls, fabrication constraints, and inspection needs. Where required, use load, laminate, structural, and review inputs accepted by the responsible qualified party.

Installation and closeout

Prepare the drawings, interface data, supplier actions, installation checks, commissioning steps, and test requirements needed by the yard and installers. Record field discrepancies and accepted changes as they occur so the as-built package reflects the work performed.

Review basis

Review the change against the current configuration

Identify the owner, OEM, contract, ABYC, ISO, class, flag, and regulatory criteria that apply to the change, then relate them to the boat's construction, service, records, and known modifications. Scan data does not establish hidden structure, material condition, load capacity, or compliance. Regulated calculations, structural substantiation, certification, and authority acceptance remain with the qualified or authorized party responsible for them.
