Set the operating basis before fixing the configuration.

Before selecting an arrangement or system, define how the boat will be used and the environment in which it will operate. Record the payload, crew, transport or launch constraints, maintenance needs, and acceptance path. This lets the owner, builder, suppliers, and qualified specialists review the same assumptions before detail work begins.

The baseline should show which decisions are fixed, which remain open, what alternatives are being compared, and what evidence is needed to select a direction.

Operating basis

Document intended service, operating area, loading, payload, crew, speed and endurance objectives, transport or launch constraints, maintainability, and acceptance criteria. Record assumptions and conflicts before they enter the arrangement.

Platform configuration and hull inputs

Use hull geometry and technical inputs accepted for the project to define the principal platform configuration and arrangement. Record access, deck and machinery zones, payload locations, construction approach, and the alternatives that need owner or specialist review.

Aluminum and composite construction

For supplier-built aluminum and composite products, define the required function, interfaces, materials, and attachment approach. Record corrosion or environmental controls, build constraints, and inspection needs. Where those questions apply, use load, laminate, structural, and review inputs accepted by the responsible qualified party.

Onboard systems

Define propulsion, power, controls, communications, navigation, auxiliaries, and payload interfaces while the arrangement is still open. Show equipment space, routing, access, service needs, operating modes, and the supplier decisions that remain unresolved.

Production and verification path

Convert the selected configuration into models, drawings, equipment and interface data, and supplier packages. Include build sequencing, inspection points, test requirements, and a method for recording accepted changes.

Review basis

Set the review basis before detail work begins

Identify the owner, OEM, contract, ABYC, ISO, class, flag, and regulatory criteria that apply to the project. Translate them into design inputs, review points, evidence, and assigned responsibilities. Regulated calculations, structural substantiation, certification, and authority acceptance remain with the qualified or authorized party responsible for them.
